Marion, Ill. — Southern Illinois American Gold Star Mothers will be honored once again as the Grand Marshals of this year’s Veterans on Parade. “As long as we have this parade, the Gold Star Mothers will always be honored as our Grand Marshals,” said parade chairman Ed Davis. “How else can we honor these American women and their families, when their sons have paid the ultimate price, by laying down their life in the service of their country.” Davis stated that “many people, not just in Southern Illinois but across this country, still don’t know who the American Gold Star...

Marion Barry Gets Probation for Tax Dodge

Former District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry was sentenced to three years probation Thursday in connection with charges that he failed to file federal or local tax returns for 2000. Barry pleaded guilty last October under an agreement reached with federal prosecutors which required him to acknowledge his failure to file returns for the years 1999 through 2004. In the Eye of the Storm: Riding it Out with Dan Rather

In the Eye of the Storm: Riding it Out with Dan Rather by Karen Pittman 17 September 2004 No matter what those celluloid talking heads say, I rather doubt Dan Rather and CBS got “snookered,” as Bill O'Reilly, the biggest blubbering head of all, bloviatingly opined. I rather doubt they got “had,” as those babbling TV brains like to claim. Rather, I am persuaded they were at least in some measure in on the whole wretched hoax. I say it’s rather more likely than not that Dan Rather and CBS were complicit in airing those forged documents whose sole purpose...

Mayor: Biblical verse will stay on Marion fire truck[does not mention God]

May 15, 2004 Marion (AP) - A biblical verse painted on Marion's new fire truck will remain there despite concerns that it promotes religion on a taxpayer-funded vehicle, the city's mayor says. Mayor Wayne Seybold said he chose to allow the verse to remain because the inscription does not say it comes from the Bible and makes no reference to God. The fire truck's side contains part of the 23rd Psalm: "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." Seybold said he received numerous calls, e-mails and letters from people who...
